French startup Mirakl

French startup Mirakl has closed another $555 million Series E funding round.

After this round, the company is valued at $3.5 billion. Mirakl helps you launch a marketplace in your online store for end customers or for B2B clients. It's a software-as-a-service marketplace, meaning Mirakl runs the marketplace for you. Silver Lake is leading the investment, with existing investors 83North, Elaia Partners, Felix Capital and Permira also participating. With today's funding round, Mirakl is experiencing a jump in valuation, as the company closed a $300 million funding round last year with a valuation of $1.5 billion.

Mirakl's clients include ABB, Accor, Airbus Helicopters, Carrefour, Express, Leroy Merlin, The Kroger Co. and Toyota Material Handling, Fnac, Etsy, Conofarma, Cdiscount.... Chances are you're already familiar with online shopping marketplaces. If an e-commerce brand doesn't have the product you're looking for, it may recommend a brand of third-party sellers to you. You can buy the product from that third-party seller directly from the store you are using. Mirakl can help you add a marketplace to your site. Some online stores have surpassed in-house marketplace transactions. This is a profitable transition because e-commerce companies don't own the inventory of third-party sellers. This frees up some capital to increase reach and online sales. And this trend isn't limited to consumer-oriented online retailers. B2B marketplaces are emerging. Car manufacturers, for example, depend on many different suppliers. They can all list parts directly on the marketplace so that repair shops can easily find the right part to fix the car.

When you add a marketplace component, you go from a one-to-many model to a many-to-many model. This means making sure you take advantage of your marketplace by partnering with the right third-party sellers. As a third-party seller, it also means that you have to list your products on as many marketplaces as possible. That's why the company also created something called Mirakl Connect. The startup is positioning itself as the centerpiece of an ecosystem of marketplaces, connecting online stores with sellers. Mirakl customers can use Mirakl Connect to find third-party sellers. And third-party sellers can more easily list their products on Mirakl-compatible marketplaces.
